2. OBJECTIVES OF "TONN ".

Targeted people
- Mainly designed for a western audience, this clip can easily be used for other cultures, including Thai culture. It is a "Thai story" focusing on "why" men refuse to use condoms but such type of story happens everywhere and everyday in every country of the world.
- However, the clip is not adequate for any group of people who does not know the basic information about AIDS and the use of condom as main prevention for HIV sexual transmission.
- Since the material is designed for TV broadcasting and since the TV reaches all sociologic groups of the society, the content is totally compatible with the requirements of the tribal, agrarian, industrial and post-industrial groups. The video clip is not sexually shocking, not involved in religion or political issues and not perturbing moral or ethic principles.
- The material is not adapted (but surely not contra-indicated) for students of primary or secondary schools.
Messages
Leading messages:

In Thailand, the "first" line of AIDS prevention messages, which includes scientific and technical basic information concerning HIV/AIDS ways of contamination and relevant prevention, has been well disseminated among the Thai population through former strong AIDS prevention campaigns. Indeed, for instance, more than 90% of Thai men know that they should use a condom when having casual sexual intercourse.
Although repeating once a major "first" line message to use condom when having dangerous sexual practices, this video clip goes beyond the "first" line message and mainly deals with "second" line messages.
"Second" line AIDS prevention messages, which can only be delivered if the "first" line messages have previously been spread into the population, focus on constraints and reasons why people do not follow the "first" line prevention messages and the consequences of such unprotected sexual behavior. These "second" line messages may be relevant to psychology, sociology or culture and may not be directly related with characteristics of HIV/AIDS disease. Detailed examples can be found in the project proposal.

This video clip tries to deliver several "second" line messages, mainly by tackling:

- The reasons evoked by men who refuse to use condoms when having dangerous sexual practices, although these men are fully aware of the risk of HIV/AIDS contamination.
- Among all the evoked reasons: less feeling, etc. , one hidden reason is the impotence, which is one possible side effect related with the use of condom. The concept of "virility" is often felt at stake with the use of condom producing impotence, even if it is temporary. A man, who is aware or even only suspicious of the possible impotence associated with the use of condom, will rather refuse to use condom than take the risk that his "virility" is criticized. The message "a man who refuses to wear a condom is not a true man" is trying to change the concept of virility, which is actually just limited mainly to the ability of the man to satisfy the woman. By using a condom and by accepting to face the possible side effect of it (temporary impotence), these are the new characteristics of a "true virile man".
- The quite sensitive issue of intra conjugal HIV contamination. The video clip emphasizes on the difficulty of the husband to confess to his wife that he had an extra conjugal and unprotected sexual relationship.
- Some dramatic consequences of HIV/AIDS disease such as children who are becoming orphans and children who are contaminated by their mother.
- The important social and psychological destructive répercussions in relation to HIV infection.

3. THE CONCEPT OF "TONN"

"Tonn" is a short emotional movie presenting a true story, which drives the spectator to the apex of sadness, sorrow and tragedy.

The camera is exploring the body of one 8 years old kid who just died from AIDS. Suddenly, in the background, a voice of a man (without seeing him) is enumerating to his wife the reasons why he refused to use a condom despite the fact that she suggested him to wear one. Instead of entering into visual details about the loving couple, the camera continues to explore the dead body of the child and the microphone continues to record the reasons evoked by the husband about why he did not use condoms.
